Water bills in north Essex are likely to rise by about three per cent - 14 per cent less than Anglian Water wanted.

Water industry regulator Ofwat issued its draft price limit today - the maximum each company can raise its price over the next five years.

Anglian Water, which provides water and sewerage to homes and businesses in north Essex, proposed a 17 per cent increase.

This was the lowest request nationally, with an average bill rise of 3.3 per cent, or £47, annually over the five years.

But today Ofwat said it could only rise by about three per cent - £9 in total over the five-year period.

Tendring Hundred, which supplies water only, proposed a three per cent increase, whilst Essex and Suffolk, which just supplies sewerage, proposed a 25 per cent rise.
