Chelmsford child protection officers are investigating allegations that a teacher at Great Baddow High School was involved in an improper relationship with a female student.

He was suspended by the board of governors at the close of the summer term and a full investigation is under way into the allegations.

Head teacher Roger Hunton declined to comment on the suspension, telling the Essex Chronicle: "I certainly don't want to say anything."

An Essex Police spokesman said: "Officers from the Chelmsford Child Protection Unit are investigating an allegation of an improper relationship between a male teacher at Great Baddow High School and a female student. At this time, there has been no arrest or charge."

A spokesman for Essex County Council said: "We can confirm a teacher has been suspended and an investigation is now under way.

"For this reason, it is inappropriate for us to comment further at this stage.

"The teacher is said to be popular among staff and pupils, having taught for a number of years. The school, in Duffield Road, Chelmsford, recently gained the status of a specialist sports college, one of only five in the county.

A recent Ofsted report said: "The school provides a safe and caring environment. This in turn promotes positive attitudes and very good behaviour."
