An alert was sparked at a Shoebury company when some white crystals were discovered.
Security staff at records firm Graphic Data, in Campfield Road, found the crystals in an envelope in the site's warehouse on Tuesday night.
The envelope was opened and staff suffered no ill effects, so it was suspected the coarse, white, odourless powder was not dangerous.
But at 10.30am yesterday morning Essex Police were informed. Officers did not attend because it was quickly realised the crystalline lump was just ordinary sugar.
The bag containing the envelope had been in the warehouse for several months undisturbed and also contained documentation.
The police said the call had been treated as a false alarm but had been made with good intent.
The company refused to comment on the incident.
