A teenager was today recovering at home after suffering serious burns in an "horrific and traumatic" attack in broad daylight in front of Walton Pier.

The 14-year-old victim, who has not been named but comes from Kirby, was flown to Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, by air ambulance. The helicopter landed on the beach.

People who were out enjoying themselves with family and friends rushed to the youngster's aid and put out the flames.

A can of lighter fluid was found at the scene. It appears the youngster was sprayed with it before being set alight.

Det Sgt Martin Brough, of Clacton police, praised those who saved the teenager from far more serious injuries.

Ambulance crews called police to the incident, at 3.40pm in The Parade on Sunday.

The boy had burns to his face and stomach.

He was treated overnight at Broomfield Hospital's special burns unit and allowed home with his parents on Monday.

Three teenagers a 17-year-old from Harwich, and a 15 and a 14-year-old, who are both from Walton were arrested, interviewed and released on police bail. They are due back at a police station in early September. No charges have been made
