A Securicor prison van ended up on its side after a collision with a car.
The crash took place yesterday on the A414 near Chelmsford.
The ambulance service was called at 7.13pm and two rapid response vehicles and two ambulances were sent to the scene.
Ambulance technician Brian Clark said: "When we saw the state of the car we expected it to be a fatal crash. Amazingly, the driver, a man from London was unhurt but for a few minor cuts."
The passenger, a 30-year-old woman from London, was trapped for a short time and then taken to Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford.
Fortunately, there were no prisoners in the Securicor van. The two women inside only suffered minor injuries and were also taken to Broomfield Hospital.
