The 28-year-old central midfielder, who has played more than 300 games in the full-time ranks, has signed a two-year contract with Gulls.

And Canvey boss Jeff King is delighted with his latest acquisition.

"Ben joined us on trial and made a good impression," he said.

"We tried to keep it quiet as there were other clubs interested in him.

"And I'm delighted he has decided to become part of things at Park Lane."

Sedgemore has been on the books of seven League clubs, including Birmingham City, Macclesfield and Mansfield Town.

And he made 31 appearances for Lincoln City last season, helping the Red Imps to make the old Third Division promotion play-offs.

The new Canvey signing showed the Park Lane crowd what he could do last night during 70 minutes of Gulls' latest friendly, against a young Charlton Athletic XI.

The Addicks took the lead after 25 minutes in spectacular fashion when front-runner Lloyd Sam thrashed a 20-yarder inside Gulls goalkeeper Danny Potter's top right-hand corner.

However, the Islanders were back on level terms within two minutes.

Skipper Neil Gregory dusted himself down after being fouled in the Charlton penalty area to tuck home a spot-kick equaliser.

Midfielder Barry Fuller fired the visitors back in front just after the hour mark, but Canvey were not to be outdone and scored their second goal on 67 minutes.

Centre-half Dave McGhee was the unlikely hero, volleying home from close range as the young Charlton starlets failed to clear a Gulls corner.
