Proposals which could improve showground and racetrack facilities in mid-Essex, have been approved.

Chelmsford borough councillors agreed to an amended application made by the Essex County Showground, for a new centre on its existing site in Great Leighs, near Chelmsford.

The decision, made at their planning committee meeting on Tuesday, could pave the way for 7,000 more spectators to watch races and equestrian events at an extended site with conference and multi-use areas, a fitness area, and stables.

The current showground, surrounded by three roads and open countryside, currently has a pavilion, a workshop building and a site manager's bungalow.

Councillors took the decision to agree to one of two options submitted to them by Essex County Showground, or both.

The first was for a larger centre to its existing site, which would contain a grandstand, horseracing circuit, conference and restaurant facilities, and better car parking areas.

Chelmsford Council originally resolved to grant planning permission to this application in April 2003.

The second was for a showground centre, parade ring, a re-designed horseracing circuit and a shortened stable block and a smaller car park.
