A man was threatened with a "sharp object" when he confronted a burglar who had broken into his home during the night.
The owner of a house in Southbourne Grove, Westcliff, heard noises in his downstairs study about 4am on July 23 and went to investigate.
He came across the burglar, who waved the sharp instrument at him.
A spokeswoman for Southend police said: "The sharp item could have been a tool the burglar had used to break into the house."
The burglar ran out of the house, making off with a DVD player, two digital cameras, a camcorder, 15 DVDs, cash and credit cards, worth about £1,600 in total.
The man is described as white, about 6ft tall. He was wearing a black cap and a dark fleece and carrying a long bag.
Anyone with information should contact PC Carl Chinnery of the burglary squad on 01702 431212.
