Damage running into tens of thousands of pounds has been caused by thieves in a smash-and-grab effort to steal high-value cars at a specialist mid-Essex service centre.

Thieves stole cars with a joint value of £150,000 from authorised Mercedes Benz centre, Waterhouse, in Waterhouse Park, Chelmsford.

One of its cars was used as a "battering ram" on the compound's gates, which sounded the alarm.

The two Mercedes Benz cars, left by customers for repair work, were stolen at just before midnight yesterday.

A £100,000 silver Mercedes SL55 convertible sports car, registered L03 XLX, was driven away, along with an older silver s320 saloon, valued at £50,000, and registered EF51 ZWA.

Essex Police are appealing for witnesses who may have heard barriers being crashed.

Anyone who can assist them with their enquiries should contact Chelmsford CID on 01245 491212, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
