Residents cheered victoriously as plans to build 70 homes at the bottom of their road were binned.

Basildon Council last night unanimously agreed to refuse planning for the homes off Bridge Road, Wickford, in front of a packed public meeting.

The controversial plans, submitted by George Wimpey Homes, included the construction of 59 flats and 11 houses to stand in place of current industrial warehouses.

Nearby residents turned out in force to oppose the plans before the development control and traffic management committee.

Their objections included the dangers of extra traffic on the quiet road, lack of parking, additional strain on local amenities and the fact the development would look out of character with the surrounding area.

Even MP John Baron, who is on holiday with his family, found time to send his objection.

Additionally Carole Morris, ward councillor for Wickford North, believed the junction at the other end of Bridge Road will become an accident blackspot with the additional cars.
