A Brentwood health club is raising awareness of a serious medical condition that is on the increase.

Dragons Health Club is running a series of initiatives on diabetes - an illness that can be linked to a sedentary lifestyles and obesity.

The centre in Chindits Lane, Warley, is opening its facilities on Saturday to anyone over the age of 16 at a charge of £3 with all the money being donated to Diabetes UK.

Children can also take part but they must be accompanied by an adult.

The one-day scheme is part of the club's Commit to Get Fit campaign. A £50 package gives six weeks' use of the gym facilities and allows participants to donate £5 to Diabetes Research in return for a further day pass.

A spokesman for the club said: "We are very keen to raise awareness of diabetes because there are clear links between exercise and the risk of developing the condition. More than three per cent of the UK population have diabetes and the incidence is increasing."

Adults and children must book in advance for Saturday. The number to call is 01277 202088.
