Controversial plans for a travellers' site in Little Tey look set to be thrown out by councillors.
Colchester Council chiefs have recommended that planning committee members refuse an application to use land west of Church Lane as a base for travellers.
Residents in the quiet village started a campaign to stop the proposal by Smart Planning for a cul-de-sac "street" of 12 plots, amid concerns it would spoil the look of the area and crime would soar if travellers' were allowed to set up home there.
A public meeting drew 120 people to St James's Church and £1,000 was raised for a Save Little Tey campaign.
The group has won support from the council planners, who say in their report to members that the site would be "detrimental to the character and appearance of the landscape and the rural character of the area".
Marks Tey Parish Council chairman Nigel Fitch welcomed the recommendation.
The committee will vote on the application at its meeting on Thursday
