The former president of Witham Lions said helping a hospital buy essential equipment for its cardiac unit has made him feel "on top of the world".

Tom Barnes, who was president of the club last year, has told of his joy at presenting Broomfield Hospital's cardiac unit with a new £2,000 cardiac monitor.

The club, which serves the Witham area, decided to help the Chelmsford hospital after raising £5,000 during the past year.

Money was raised through collections as well as a substantial donation from The Grove Shopping Centre, Witham.

When deciding where the money should go Mr Barnes, 84, explained a member who was a regular visitor to the unit suggested buying the equipment.

The remainder of the money will go towards other events or schemes, including buying Christmas hampers for the elderly and holding a party for children affected by the Chernobyl disaster.
