A couple who did not throw away a bottle of methadone belonging to a visitor to their home were prosecuted for possession.

Vincent Claydon, 39 and Michelle Claydon, 36, of Jefferies Road, Cressing, admitted the offence when they appeared at Chelmsford Crown Court. Vincent Claydon was fined £50.

His wife was fined a total of £300. She also admitted possessing nine capsules of morphine and traces of diamorphine and obstructing police. Both were ordered to pay £50 costs each.

Keith Barron, prosecuting, said police went to the couple's address with a warrant to search for drugs on September 23.

Mrs Claydon initially tried to hide a toy egg containing nine capsules but gave it to officers.

There were traces of diamorphine on some scales and a bottle of methadone which had been prescribed to someone else.

Graham Hemsworth, mitigating, said a visitor left the methadone six months earlier and the Claydons did not throw it away.

Recorder Anesta Weekes QC told the couple: "You have both been users of class A drugs for some time and well aware of the dangers."
