Work is getting under way to repair the roof of one of Colchester's oldest churches.
Parishioners of St Peter's Church, North Hill, have been raising money to keep a roof over their heads.
Regular worshipper Ken Cooke, who is involved in organising the St Peter's church roof fund, said beams in the south aisle were rotten and the roof needed urgent repairs to restore it for the next few hundred years.
Mr Cooke said £90,000 had to be raised before grant money could be attracted for the repairs, which are likely to cost more than £200,000.
An archaeology event raised £500 and a bric-a-brac stall raised another £975, plus £85 was raised by selling a donated Victorian sampler at auction.
Roof tiles are still on sale, at £5 each, in a practical way of helping the repairs
