A year ago he was waiting for the chance to make his first-team debut, but now Anton Ferdinand is determined to become more than just a bit-part player at West Ham.
First team ambitions - Hammers defender Anton Ferdinand hopes to be a first team regular this term Picture: TERENCE BUNCH
After starting in the opening game of last season at Preston North End, the 18-year-old struggled to hold a regular place through a turbulent season.
Nine league starts, and a further 11 substitute performances, gave the defender a taste of first-team life - and now he is ready for more.
"I felt I came a long way last season and I was gutted to miss out on being in the team for the play-offs," he said.
"Saying that, it makes me more determined to play better and show the boss what I can do."
Like his big brother Rio, Anton emerged from the youth ranks as a central defender.
But much of his first-team experience has been in the right-back slot, a position which remains a problem.
Tomas Repka and Hayden Mullins have both filled in there, but unless a full-back arrives soon the space will still be up for grabs.
"Centre-back is good for me, but I will play anywhere if it means being in the team," he said.
