Canvey Island Swimming Club's Jason Daniels finished a creditable 18th out of 49 competitors in the boys' 11-14 years 100m backstroke at the National Championships.
Jason clocked 1:17.65 to finish behind South African winner Joshue Kriel 1:10.08 in the heats.
The islander finished 70th out of 81 in the heats of the 200m freestyle in 2:31.15. Kriel again won the heats, clocking 2:15.97.
Basildon's Chloe Frances, swimming for Chelmsford, finished fourth in the girls' 11-13 years 100m breaststroke heats in 1:25.69.
She improved her time to 1:23.73 in the 11 years final to claim third place behind winner Rachel Gardener (Leeds, 1:19.94).
