Firefighters battled to rescue a pony stuck in a ditch yesterday morning using horse slings and more than a little muscle.
The young pony had sunk its back legs in mud in the ditch, at the bottom of Haven Road, in Canvey, but crews were able to get him out in less than half an hour.
Canvey fire station commander Martin Pullen said: "Normally getting a horse or pony out of a ditch can take hours, but we and the pony were lucky.
"Using horse slings and a lot of brute strength, crew from two appliances from Canvey and a rescue tender from Leigh were able to get him out very quickly.
"He is fine now - we got him out and he was soon back in his field."
The crews were able to rescue the horse in enough time to prevent him going into shock.
