Darren Gough will return to do battle with promotion hopefuls Hampshire when Essex go into action at the Rose Bowl today.
The England fast bowler was rested for the game against Nottinghamshire, but skipper Ronnie Irani revealed he would definitely be back to spearhead the new ball attack.
It has yet to be decided who will make room for him, but the choice will rest between Scott Brant and Ashley Cowan, who has only recently returned to four-day action following a long lay-off recovering from knee surgery.
"We will wait and see if Ashley is suffering any reaction before coming to a decision," said Irani.
Although he has turned in some decent performances in the one-day games, Brant has been an immense disappointment at Championship level.
He has failed to take a wicket in the last couple of games and in half-a-dozen outings this summer has claimed only nine wickets at an average of around 65 runs each.
