A bank note issued more than 120 years ago by a Braintree bank has sold for more than £1,000.
The £50 note formed part of a collection of 80 rare notes, discovered in a house at Eldon near Saffron Walden, which sold for a surprise total of £17,000.
The notes were found in a large box of old coins by John Foster, a valuer at Sworders of Stansted Mountfitchet, while he was carrying out a probable valuation.
The collection also included a £5 pound banknote issued in Manningtree more than 160 years ago, which sold for £550.
In the 19th century, numerous banks were set up throughout the country and were often engraved with a design identifying the locality.
The Braintree note sold for £1,200 but had been due to raise about £300.
