Hundreds of pounds worth of raffle prizes for a fundraising event have been stolen from the garage of the charity's disabled treasurer.

Distraught - Julie Fant was collecting for German Shepherds Picture: ROB BROWNE

Julie Fant, of Markhams, Stanford-le-Hope, was left distraught after thieves forced their way into her garage in the early hours of Friday morning and took £300 worth of alcohol, a mini television and radio set and her shopping trolley, which is specially designed to fit on her wheelchair.

The goods taken, which included 12 bottles of Buck's Fizz, vintage bottles of spirits and a bottle of champagne, were all to be used as prizes in a draw at the German Shepherd Welfare Fund's charity day in September.

Mrs Fant, 59, who is the treasurer of the club, said: "It is so sad because Marks and Spencer and other local shops donated prizes for the fundraising day and they were all taken.

"The bottles of spirits were worth a lot of money and I had donated them myself from my late husband's collection. They also stole my trolley to carry all the stuff in and that will cost me £40 to replace."

It is hoped the fun day will still go ahead on September 5.

Anyone who saw any suspicious behaviour between 2am and 5am on Friday morning or has any information about the whereabouts of the goods should call Thurrock CID on 01375 391212.
