The equivalent of four football pitches of crops caught fire in the midday sun yesterday.
Fire crews arrived to find flames of more than 12 foot engulfing four hectares of standing corn behind Mill Lane, Stanbridge.
The blaze, which a leading firefighter dubbed as "impressive", was brought under control within half an hour by four crews from Southend, Leigh and Rochford at 12.08pm.
