Works on improvements to Eastwoodbury Lane creating barriers to protect traffic from aircraft will be completed near Southend Airport by the middle of next month.
Currently flashing lights are in place as a barrier between the two.
Airport director Roger Campbell told the Southend Business and Tourism Partnership the works were planned to be completed by the middle of July.
He added: "Unfortunately, some of the materials which we need for the safety works required by the Civil Aviation Authority have been delayed as they come from abroad."
Mr Campbell said it was expected detailed planning permission would shortly be granted by Rochford District Council for the new terminal building and railway station link.
He went on: "These are very exciting times for the airport and now we are confident we have a future."
