Fire engulfed a bedsit used as homeless accommodation after the occupant fell asleep with a candle burning.
Five people living in the rest of the three-storey building, in York Road, Southend, had to be evacuated after the candle set a chair alight, at about 10.55am on Friday. Nobody was hurt.
