Police and fire officers are carrying out a full investigation into a blaze at a house which is being converted into two flats.
Two crews went to St Andrews Road, Clacton, where they found the property smoke-logged.
Two firefighters using breathing apparatus carried out a search of the building in case anyone was inside but no-one was found.
Sub officer Mick Sparrow said that the blaze was being treated as suspicious and an investigation into the cause was being carried out.
Anyone who saw anything suspicious or has any information on the blaze is asked to contact Clacton Police on 01255 221312.
