A barn was totally destroyed when fire swept through it.

Eight appliances, as well as a rescue tender and aerial platform, attended the blaze at a workshop at Batts Farm, Batts Road in Steeple, near Maldon, yesterday.

The fire, which is being investigated as possibly of suspicious origin, started at just before 11am.

Martin Cable, station officer at Maldon fire station and one of the 40 firefighters who attended the blaze, said the single-storey building was well alight when they arrived.

The 40 metre by 20 metre building is used as a workshop and tyres are shredded there.

The farm owner raised the alarm after seeing smoke from the workshop while working at the back of his house.
