Canvey could be used to store a potentially explosive substance capable of causing "catastrophic" damage.
Calor Gas's application to store liquefied natural gas at its premises in Thames Road within metres of family homes will be discussed tonight by Castle Point planning committee.
If the gas was to leak, new studies have shown people would get second degree burns as far away as 4,600 feet - almost a mile - from fires.
