Wayne Brown is just relishing his role as Colchester United's acting captain.

Leading by example - Wayne Brown

And nothing will please the enthusiastic central defender more than to lead the U's into the new Coca-Cola League One season against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Saturday.

Brown said, as he looked forward to the big kick-off: "Karl Duguid will always be the captain in my book as long as he's at the club.

"But while Dugy's out of action I'm thrilled to have the chance to be doing the job in his place."

The former Ipswich Town and Watford defender is clearly delighted to have been given the job by U's boss Phil Parkinson following his switch from Vicarage Road in the close season.

He said: "I'd love to skipper the side on a permanent basis if, for some reason, Dugy couldn't make it. It's role I would really relish.

"The captaincy would be a great bonus, especially as I like to think of myself as a leader out on the pitch, even though there are 11 skippers out there every game in my view.

"But I do like to talk a lot, especially across the back four, and while I've got the armband I will always be giving it my best.
