But the Irons supremo admitted that he has spoken to the ex-England international about a possible switch across London to Upton Park.
And he explained that he was looking to add some proven quality to his largely youthful squad, hoping that the extra experience of newcomers Sergei Rebrov and Teddy Sheringham will aid the development of his young guns.
"I feel most of the signings I've made here have been younger players so I've got room to bring in some seniors as well," he said.
"On the other hand I don't want too many players here from Spurs.
"I don't think West Ham's fans would be patting me on the back about that.
"I spoke with Darren because he's London-based and he's looking for a new club.
"He's a quality player and I've asked him what his plans are."
