New Witham Town chairman Tony Last says stand-in manager Russell Tanner is doing 'a brilliant' job - but insists: "I'm not finished yet".

Last has taken a role 'upstairs' at Spa Road following the recent resignation of Alan Collins, while Tanner has been promoted from assistant to caretaker boss.

However, Last still wants an input into on-the-pitch matters with the Ryman League division two outfit.

He said: "I've been acting chairman for the past month and I've been working seven days a week for that time, making sure everything is fine behind the scenes.

"But I cannot just walk away from the football side. That's what I love.

"I've had people asking me how many chairman-managers there are, but Chris Symes does it at Cornard United and there are other examples.

"Russell is doing a brilliant job and he has been receiving a lot of help from senior players, but you cannot run a team by committee.

"I'd like to get back in charge as soon as possible and give Russell a chance to get back on the pitch, because that's where we still need him."

Tanner has enjoyed his spell at the helm, but said: "I will speak to Tony about the situation and find out his exact plans."
