Fast-food giant McDonald's could be opening in South Woodham Ferrers.

Asda's cafe could be replaced by a branch of the fast-food chain under major plans to change the supermarket.

The proposal rests on the supermarket's clothes and homeware section being moved to the former Harvey's shop, also in the town centre.

A final decision is likely to be made towards the end of the summer, said an Asda spokesman.

"Asda in South Woodham Ferrers has been there since about 1977. It was one of our first southern stores and we recognise it needs an overhaul. What we are looking at is the possibility of moving George, jewellery, homeware and general merchandise to the Harvey's building and also opening up a photoshop there," said the spokesman.

"If it all goes ahead, then what we would look at is replacing the existing cafe with a McDonald's, but it all hinges on whether the (Harvey's) scheme goes ahead.

"We have spoken to McDonald's and all the staff that are employed in the cafe would still be employed. No one would lose their jobs."

The news has provoked concerns about litter and potential youth problems in a town centre which is already under a temporary curfew to reduce vandalism and nuisance.

Town council vice chairman Cllr Malcolm Case said: "We would expect Asda and or McDonald's to keep control of litter and we would want some sort of say on hours of opening."
