The RSPCA Danaher Animal Home in Wethersfield is counting the cost of an enforced 13 week shutdown caused by a fungal infection.
The home re-opened on Monday after getting the all-clear from vets but officials said the infection ringworm had cost £25,000.
Manager Becky Kenny said: "This will have a huge knock-on effect for us. Being independent we are going to have to find this money from somewhere.
The reopening brought a rush of visitors keen to take on a new pet. Some had been reserved by prospective owners since before the closure.
Ms Kenny said: "We are delighted to be open to the public again and to be able to start finding new homes for the delightful animals we have at the moment."
She said there were about 30 dogs and 35 cats at the home, which is RSPCA affiliated and run by a board of trustees. Among the pets is a "gorgeous" 11-year-old German Shepherd
Anyone keen to offer a new home to cat, dog or other animal can visit the centre at Thorley farm, Hedingham Road, Wethersfield any day except Wednesday between 11am and 3pm
