Basildon Hospital today moved to quash fears that equipment which should be destroyed was being re-used.

Bosses have admitted an "unfortunate" poster with "very bad wording" that appeared at the hospital should not have been released.

There were concerns after a patient saw the poster, which clearly stated items had been used several times despite being designated for single use only.

The repeated use of medical items which should have been used just once sparked concern two years ago after a number of deaths nationally were linked to it.

A hospital spokeswoman apologised for the misunderstanding, adding: "We would like to reassure patients there is no evidence to suggest single use items have been re-used."
