Richard de Boltz, of Royal Corinthian Yacht Club's Otters, established himself as the top Laser 4.7 helm in the country when he finished seventh at the combined world and European championships at Lake Garda last week.

And but for a disappointing finish, he might have finished even higher.

De Boltz was only once outside of the top ten in the first seven races, which included a first and a second, and he managed a seventh in the last race.

At one time he was lying in fifth place overall, but a 13th followed by a 52nd, both of which he discarded, dropped him down the fleet

The event was won by Justine Onvlee, of South Africa

The regatta is the largest world championship for under 18 year olds and attracted an entry of 280 helms from 23 countries

De Boltz, who only celebrated his 16th birthday a month ago, now moves on to Cornwall for the Laser 4.7 National Championships

Meanwhile, his 14-year-old brother, David, is off to Sweden next week where he captains the Great Britain Optimist team at the European Championships

And not to miss out on what is becoming a tremendous season for the de Boltz trio, 13-year-old Lucy has just returned from the French Optimist nationals where she finished as the top Briton -boy or girl - in a fleet of 600 entries.

At the weekend she finished second to Otters' teammate Peter Hannah in the RCYC Optimist Open and is now moves on, with a number of other Otters, to the national championships in Scotland
