Three men have been cleared by a court on charges of assaulting a police officer.

A jury heard how trouble in a Colchester pub ended with Aaron Connolly being cut in the face and then punched and kicked when the melee moved outside.

Chelmsford Crown Court heard yesterday the man accused of the attack inside the bar claimed it was an accident, and the two brothers accused of attacking the officer outside denied taking part and said it was nothing to do with them.

Brothers Perry, 23, and Lloyd Clarke, 18, of Crome Close, Colchester, and 22-year-old Frazer Bond, of Beaconsfield Avenue, Colchester, denied causing Mr Connolly actual bodily harm. The brothers also denied a joint charge of affray.

They were cleared on all the charges by a jury of six men and six women and were formally discharged by the court following the verdicts.

David Markham, prosecuting, said Mr Connolly was with a group of off-duty colleagues in Edward's bar in Head Street on February 27 last year when trouble broke out.
