Southend won the Kindred Shield for the first time in 14 years when it was played at Rochford on Saturday.

The 36-hole Greensome competition involves four pairs from each of the five Kindred clubs -- Southend, Belfairs, Thorpe Hall, Boyce Hill and Rochford -- with the best three scores to count.

And in the end, Southend notched 237 Stableford points to easily see off the challenge from Boyce Hill's 221 and Rochford on 219.

Top dogs for Southend were Mick Edmunds and Mick McGregor who scored 42 points in the morning and 40 after lunch, but there was also good back up from Stan Ferguson and Brian Rackham 37 and 40, plus Colin Wyatt and Ian Pascoe 39 and 35.

Best Boyce scores came from C Jarman and D Daniels 37 and 40, T Morton and B Murphy 33 and 42, plus P Boston and D Smith 35 and 34.

Past captains Peter Dolby and John Coates led the way for Rochford with a consistent 41 and 39.

They were followed by Dick Jones and Bill Boys 40 and 32, and Steve Cann and Howard Levine 32 and 31.

Rochford cadets narrowly failed to make the Essex Youth Shield semi-finals when they were pipped 3-2 by Braintree at Chelmsford on Saturday.
