Plans are already getting under way for Old Leigh Regatta which is expected to attract thousands of spectators.

The organising committee of the event, which helps local youth groups and the Macmillan Cancer Nurses, has planned a fun-filled weekend in the high street for September 11 and 12.

For more than 30 years, the regatta has been a highlight in the local social calendar.

The whole of the High Street will be closed to traffic for the entertainment and competitions, which form most of the day.

There will be live music, including folk, jazz and blues, as well as morris dancing.

Competitions the public can enter include cockle eating and banana eating for both adults and children, as well as a truck pull, climbing the greasy pole and pillow fighting.

Other events include the mudflat football match, sedan chair races, the Scout pentathlon and the Cub welly boot-throwing competition.

Organising committee member Antony Lowther said anyone who wanted to take part in the day's events should bring spare clothes as they were sure to get either wet or muddy.
