A drive-through KFC restaurant is to open on Canvey next month after a delay of more than three years.

Around 26 full and part-time staff are being recruited to work at the restaurant, set to open on Monday, August 23, in the High Street.

But councillors and residents have criticised the development on the former market site as "an accident waiting to happen". Former island councillor Lionel Hart, who lives in the High Street said: "It shouldn't be there.

"We don't want it but we're going to have to like it or lump it.

"The exit from there is very limited so we've ended up with another traffic hazard which is an accident waiting to happen.

"The High Street is totally insufficient to support such a building."

A spokesman for Kefco Sales, the franchisee which will operate the KFC on Canvey said: "We can confirm that the new KFC on Canvey is a drive-through restaurant that will open on the Monday, August 23.

"We expect this will create 26 local jobs."
