Royal Mail apologised after a special delivery containing insurance papers for a Southend man arrived a day late.
The delay forced Dennis Miller to hold off buying a new car, for which he needed the papers.
Mr Miller said: "It was a waste of everyone's time."
The papers were sent last Thursday by insurance company Norwich Junior from Sheffield and were due to arrive at a car dealer in Rayleigh Weir the following morning. Instead they got there on Saturday.
When Mr Miller called Royal Mail he was told the papers had arrived in Southend on the same day they were sent, but nothing had happened to them on Friday.
A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: "We believe that this was an isolated incident. However, we do apologise for the late delivery of this particular piece of mail."
