Castle Point Council and the police are still trying to evict a group of travellers who have set up camp on land behind Castle Point Rugby club.
The travellers, in about 30 caravans and trucks, were said to have broken through secure gates via Kellington Road, Canvey, on Monday night.
Police are trying to ascertain who owns the land. Officers went to the site with council officials but the travellers refused to move on.
Canvey councillor, Ray Howard said: "It seems they intend to stay at least a week. I understand from residents they have been approaching people about gardening work."
