Vandals may force a charity to close, devastated volunteers have revealed.

Castle Point's mainland Age Concern branch, which works with elderly residents in Benfleet, Hadleigh and Thundersley, has been brought to its knees financially over the past six months.

The last straw came after its phone, outside its rented office at Richmond Hall, in Richmond Avenue, was trashed by yobs.

Age Concern was faced with a £270 repair bill from BT. Paying it will clear the kitty and could force the organisation to close.

Volunteer Reg Coleman, 75, said: "It will be such a shame if we are forced to close because we are dedicated to helping people. There are those who would be lost without the support that we give. "
