Closed-circuit television (CCTV) will be fitted at railway stations in north Essex as part of a nationwide programme of improvements.

Work is getting under way at Colchester North, Kelvedon and Clacton stations, where waiting rooms will also be built.

New facilities include CCTV systems and waiting rooms. Work will be finished by the autumn as part of a £25m project by Network Rail and the Strategic Rail Authority to improve 68 stations nationally.

Route director Jon Wiseman said: "Comfortable stations with modern facilities are an important part of our continued programme to rebuild the railway."

The cameras will be monitored by staff at the stations.
