A Bocking nursing home will be torn down after councillors decided to build 31 new homes in its place.
St Francis Nursing Home is next to St Francis's convent in Broad Road. It was founded towards the end of the 19th century.
The property was, in part, acquired from the Courtauld family, who played a large part in the development of Braintree.
The home does not adjoin the convent, but is on the other side of Convent Lane, nearby. It was used as a number of things, including an orphanage and then a school, before becoming a nursing home.
The decision to demolish part of the site was made at Tuesday's meeting of the Braintree area committee.
The proposed development will see two of the older-style buildings at the home converted into three homes, one three-bedroom house and two two-bedroom houses.
This will be followed by the construction of a further 28 three, four and five-bedroom houses.
