Southend Council has been given back £280,000 for local transport plan improvements.

The money was frozen by the Government in December because it said guidelines had not been met.

But while the council has assured residents the money will be used "properly" within this financial year, it was unable to confirm where the money would be directed.

Cabinet member in charge of transport, Brian Kelly, said it would be used for local road safety plans and other improvements, such as safer-journey-to-school initiatives.

Transport minister Tom Mc Nulty announced Southend was one of four authorities to have had money withheld for scoring a "weak" rating in the most recent local transport review, but to have made positive steps to improve.
