The mystery surrounding the origins of a village monument has been solved.
The monument, situated alongside the Maldon Road towards Woodham Mortimer near Maldon, is overgrown with brambles.
It actually belongs to the Coopers' Company of London which owns the surrounding land and is a former owner of Woodham Mortimer Hall, opposite the monument.
Inscribed on the stone surface is the name William Alexander.
According to Richard Perrin, Coopers' Company curator, the man named on the stone became master of the Coopers' Company in 1724.
Mr Perrin said: "William Alexander owned Woodham Mortimer Hall and he left it to the Coopers' Company when he died so it could provide housing for people in need.
"The monument was checked last year and is a bit overgrown but we need to get down to it again."
