Part of the A12 faces an overnight closure to replace worn-out concrete carriageway.
The northbound carriageway of the Kelvedon bypass will be closed from 9pm on Friday until 5am on Saturday, with traffic diverted through Kelvedon and Feering.
Roger Chenery, Highways Agency project manager, said: "This busy stretch of the A12 has deteriorated over the past year and now needs urgent remedial work to remove two areas of sub-standard road surfacing and provide a better, smoother, quieter surface."
