A £200,000 sea defence scheme in Harwich has been given the go-ahead.

The two-fold scheme to strengthen sea defences and improve public access to Harwich seafront was approved by Tendring Council.

Cash has been put aside to carry out vital repair work on the sea wall, which runs 300m from Dovercourt to Stone Pier.

At the same time, builders will level out the public footpath, which slopes by the sea wall.

When the work is finished, the public will have access right around that part of the coast.

The estimates are complete and the contract has been signed by Tendring councillor Harry Shearing in support of the project.

Work is due to start in September and is expected to be completed by next April.

Mr Shearing said the scheme was extremely important to the area and that great consideration was being given to the public.

He said: "There will be some disruption, but we will keep this to a minimum."
