A new approach to promoting the health of Brentwood residents could see the whole borough being designated as a 'Healthy Living Centre'.

The Local Strategic Partnership has placed boosting the health and fitness of those living in the area at the heart of its projects for the coming year.

Council chief executive, Bob McLintock, said: "We are looking at declaring the whole of Brentwood as a Healthy Living Centre and working together to find new ways to encourage people to live healthier lives. As part of that we are talking about housing, public health, the prevention of accidents, education about smoking and drugs and other issues relating to the health of residents."

The report to councillors highlights that Healthy Living Centres have been successfully introduced in several areas across the country with funding coming from the New Opportunities Fund.

Applications for funding are no longer being accepted, but the council is looking at working with partners to develop the idea as a wider concept which would not require major capital investment.

Healthy Living Centres can focus on promoting a range of facilities or provision. This can include better access to advice and information on broad health issues such as diet, stress and exercise and the development of exercise facilities.
