A knife-wielding man wearing a balaclava tried to break his way into a home.
The raider was foiled by two men who fought him off on their doorstep in Compton Road, Colchester, last night.
Police say there was a tussle in which the attacker fell to the ground and then fled.
He was stripped of his balaclava and weapon but the pair of occupants failed to give a description of him.
Det Sgt Roger Napier, of Colchester CID, has appealed for information or witnesses to the incident which happened at about 6.30pm.
