Colchester's biggest housing estate is starting to look like a rubbish dump. That's the assessment of a campaigning councillor trying to get a civic amenity centre brought back to Greenstead.

Tim Young (Lab, St Andrew's) says bulky rubbish has been left strewn on road sides ever since the dump site was shut down two months ago.

Fly-tipping has increased and he says rats and maggots will not be far behind in the hot weather.

Mr Young said: "It has been devastating for Greenstead estate. The estate is filling up with rubbish, it's very unfortunate.

"Colchester's biggest housing estate is beginning to look like a rubbish dump."

He said the Greenstead civic amenity centre was hugely popular and was well used by people in the east of the borough for more than 12 years.

But the site, which saw 75 tonnes of waste dropped off every Saturday, was suddenly closed by Colchester Council waste bosses.

They said it broke health and safety regulations and was "an accident waiting to happen."

Mr Young has put a forward a compromise for a new fortnightly collection, which would see freighters pick up waste at three points in the borough on Saturday mornings.

On the suggested solution, portfolio holder for street services and waste, Peter Chillingworth (Con, Great Tey), said: "That's quite a possibility and there are other possibilities we are looking at, and we will come up with a solution in due course."
